On an Easter morning seven years ago, Margo Holmes sat surrounded by family, celebrating communion. Her six-year-old granddaughter’s innocent questions about the bread and cup sparked a divine calling.

Unable to find a children’s book that explained the gospel simply yet profoundly, Margo felt the Holy Spirit nudge her: Write one yourself.

That moment birthed Understanding Communion, the first in what would become a remarkable legacy of 122 children’s books, with four adult titles and more on the way. “Each time I thought I was done, the Lord would wake me in the early morning hours, dropping a new title into my heart,” Margo shares.

Her mission? To ground children in God’s truth, shielding them from a world peddling lies.

Margo’s passion stems from her own story of redemption, detailed in her adult biography, Oh, The Wonder! Born into a home marred by abuse and neglect, she knew nothing of God until age seven, when a stranger invited her to Vacation Bible School. There, memorizing John 3:16, she recalls a transformative moment: “As I climbed a stairwell, repeating those words, my little heart grasped that Jesus died for me. I felt loved for the first time. I was born again.”

Tragically, her exposure to God’s Word ended with VBS. “If I’d known God’s promises—His plans for hope and a future—it could have spared me years of pain,” she reflects, citing Jeremiah 29:11. This fuels her urgency to equip children with biblical truth early, before the world’s deceptions take root.

Margo’s books, starting with her nine-book gospel series (God’s Great Love, Why Be Baptized?, and others), weave Scripture into stories that teach salvation, baptism, and Christian virtues. With 40 titles published and available on her website, she’s driven by a burden: “Kids today are bombarded with lies. Parents and grandparents must lay a foundation of truth to help them stand strong.”

The oldest granddaughter, Lauren, reading God’s Great Love, to Margo’s youngest granddaughter, Bristol.

Her stories don’t just teach—they inspire. Margo infuses each with character traits like courage and faith, aiming to spark a personal relationship with Jesus. “I want children to yearn to be like Him, to serve Him, and to live joyful, purpose-filled lives,” she declares, echoing Psalm 16:11.

Margo’s vision is catching fire in her family. Her three youngest granddaughters—June, Braelyn, and Bristol—penned their own book, The Daily Lives and Prayers of June, Braelyn, and Bristol. Each chose five scriptures, pairing them with heartfelt prayers to show kids that God listens to simple, honest words. “This is my greatest legacy,” Margo says. “They’re becoming scribes for God’s kingdom, awakening others to His love.”

Through her ministry, Margo calls families to action: “Share God’s love one book at a time.” Her works, available at www.margoholmes.com, offer tools to disciple the next generation. As she puts it, “God’s Word can transform hearts. I’ve seen it in my life, and I pray it for every child who reads these stories.”
