UK: Islam’s influence deepens in unexpected place

Islam’s increasing influence in the UK has now manifested itself with bold new initiatives within our much-prized National Health Service.

Support for Islam generally, and the pro-Palestinian cause in particular, is part of a woke progressive alliance with Muslims on a number of issues that has had the effect of discriminating against Christians.

Tim Dieppe, author of The Challenge of Islam (Wilberforce Publications, 2025) and head of public policy at campaigning organization Christian Concern, said: “The NHS appears to be going out of its way to facilitate and encourage Islamic practices.”

For example, staff were encouraged to support Ramadan and to show allyship by fasting for a day while the NHS Muslim Network has provided advice on how to convert to Islam and on what is acceptable dress for women.

Dieppe cites a recent case in which the NHS was judged to have directly discriminated against a Christian nurse for wearing a cross at work. Mary Onuoha was forced out of her job as an NHS theatre practitioner for wearing a cross necklace. But the court judgment found that the NHS treatment of Mrs Onuoha was “humiliating and offensive”.

In another case, Christian nurse Jennifer Melle, who referred to a man identifying as a woman as ‘Mr’, has been suspended by the NHS Trust for misgendering. Yet the convicted pedophile patient had racially abused the nurse.

“The message is clear,” Tim Dieppe added. “Being Muslim is to be respected and encouraged, while being Christian is discouraged and sometimes discriminated against.

“The NHS Muslim Network is evidently confident, bold and assertive, and encourages its members to be so in talking about their faith. But Christians in the NHS can learn from their example. There is also an NHS Christian Network, and the service needs bold Christians who will openly share their faith…

“The influence of the NHS Muslim Network in the NHS is yet another example of the increasing influence of Islam in the UK generally. We can expect to see much more influence of Islamic networks in UK workplaces as Islam continues to grow in influence and in confidence across the UK.”
