Bob Dylan

Brooklyn-born Messianic Jew Al Kasha, 75, the double Oscar winning songwriter who in 1978 prayed with Bob Dylan at a Bible study in his Beverly Hills home to receive Christ, believes that Dylan never lost his faith despite many rumors to the contrary.

Bob Dylan made a well-publicized conversion to Christianity, went through a discipleship course at a Southern California Calvary Chapel, and produced three strongly Christian albums, “Slow Train Coming” – written in Kasha’s home — “Saved” and “Shot of Love”.

However, when a fourth “Christian” album failed to materialize in 1983, a rumor was circulated that Dylan had “renounced” his faith.

His new album, “Tempest,” is replete with Christian lyrics, as Kasha notes: “I am absolutely thrilled that Bob has shown through this new record that he has never lost God’s calling in life,” he said. “He’s never given up.

“I get upset when people think that he has because you don’t write all these songs just out there. It takes time to write them and they’re all about Christ so I’ve said this in the past — the media has hurt rather than helped him.”

Kasha went on to say, “I have known Dylan since 1960 when I was at Columbia as their youngest-ever record producer and they were going to drop him from the label as his first CD only sold 7,000 copies.

“I was 22 years old and they had all of these great artists like Rosemary Clooney, Guy Mitchell as well as Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett, and when I heard this in a meeting, I stood up and, with my legs shaking, and told all of these veteran record producers, “We can’t drop him. He’s a great song writer and they finally agreed and now the rest is history.”

Despite all of his success, having won two Oscars for the theme songs from The Poseidon Adventure (The Morning After) and The Towering Inferno (We May Never Love Like This Again), (both with Joel Hirschhorn), he had a secret that was destroying his life – he was suffering from agoraphobia.

He told me that it was destroying his life, but then one night, in the bedroom which he woulnd’t leave, he tuned into a late Christian TV show and realized that Jesus was indeed his Messiah. He prayed in his room and gave his life over to Christ and was healed of his agoraphobia.

Not long after, Kasha met up with Jess Moody, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys, an independent congregation with some 10,000 members, who Kasha said “was very sensitive to people in Hollywood.” It was Moody who then suggested that Kasha begin studying at theological seminary, and he became an ordained Southern Baptist pastor, and started his weekly Bible study in his home where he would teach with his two Oscars on the piano, as I well know as I often would attend, as would people like Bob Dylan, Donna Summer and Mel Carter.

“We had them all coming along to my home Bible study, and that would include struggling actors and actresses, singers and dancers, but also these big stars as well,” he told me. “At that time, there was no place for them to go so we would try to solve some problems that they were facing that were biblically based.”

He then spoke about Bob Dylan who he said had been told about the study by some friends who had shared about this Jewish man who was teaching about Jesus.

“He came to the house every week for six months. In fact he wrote the album, ‘Slow Train Coming’ in in our house. Bob was, at that time, going through a spiritual search and if you look at his track record as a writer, he was always seeking after Jesus and he finally realized that Jesus was his Savior.”

Kasha said that the night that Dylan prayed the “Sinners Prayer” with him, he was with his friend called Clark Mathias and his wife, Ceil.

I asked Ceil if she could remember what happened and she replied, “I sure do, like it was yesterday. There was an amazing warm feeling in our home and in our hearts, and he [Dylan] just opened up and said [after Al Kasha had asked him if he wanted to receive Jesus into his life], ‘Yes I do, yes I do, yes I do,’ and that was that.”

Al Kasha then added, “And he wrote his whole entire ‘Slow Train Coming’ Album in front of our fireplace.”

Did Bob Dylan ever share those songs with you when he was writing them?

“Yes he did,” said Kasha. “We gave him a key to the house because we were song writers and song writers feel a sense of spirit in a room. You know, Dan, you’re a writer yourself and I am sure you would say, ‘I want to sit where I feel something good.’ So he [Dylan] had a key to our house and we trusted him. I heard the guitar playing some nights but I wouldn’t bother him. It was an incredible experience.”

Kasha added, “He [Dylan] said that he felt out home was ‘spiritually anointed’. So many other people also got saved at our home and I see many of them here tonight for this affair. I could hug every one of them.”

I asked Al Kasha what his all-time favorite of the ones Bob Dylan wrote in his home.

“He has a song called ‘Jesus is Lord’ and I love that one,” he said. “However, there are many that I love and I don’t really want to pick out one because I want everyone to buy the album, but I love a lot of them.”

Kasha said that Bob Dylan was baptized after his conversion in Santa Monica, near Malibu, by people from the Calvary Chapel affiliated church.

“So is Bob Dylan a believer?” I again asked him.

“The answer is yes,” he said firmly, “and I think the world doesn’t like to see someone like him being a believer because he’ll bring other people to the Lord, which he’s done.”

Al Kasha concluded by saying, “Looking back, it is an amazing thing that happened in our home. It’s been all these years and our Bible study eventually wound up seeing people like Donna Summer and Bob Dylan accepting Christ.”

    • Bob has returned to Judaism; not Christianity. There is no such thing as a messianic jew. Doesn’t exist. Read the translation of the Torah in the Stone Edition Chumash. Be open minded, and you will find the truth as to why all Jews would return to Torah. Read word for word. Also, view you tube video, Evangelical Minister becomes Rabbi for more insight.

      • Actually, Jesus was Jewish. So, Christianity, which Jesus never called it, was a jewish sect. He was a rebel with teachings that looked rebellious in the eyes of alot of the high priests and greeks in power. It got him killed. So yes, there is such a thing as a messianic jew. Its a jew that follows the teachings of another Jew named Yeshua, who today we call Jesus.

        • Oh yea He will save the Jew, but those people will only be a remnant that were spoken of. They are those that realize Jesus (Yeshua) is their only redemption.

        • Absolutely correct and it is truth that Nathaniel has written!

drgutkarma: I have numerous friends that were born Jewish, they also have a living, daily, loving relationship with their Saviour and Lord Jesus and they are still Jewish,…they use the term Messianic Jew. So do you think they are wrong? They know the Torah. They have also been fervent in studying scriptures from the bible. drgutkarma, YOU are badly mistaken.

          BLESSINGS TO ALL

          • I AM Jewish. We do not believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. We believe that the Messiah is yet to come. In the Jewish religion Jesus was a rabbi with different ideas.
There is a Jewish organization called Jews for Jesus. They basically believe the Jesus is/was indeed the son of G-d, while still holding onto some Jewish ideas.
It is highly possible that Bob Dylan shares a lot of the same ideas as Jews for Jesus.
It is also possible that he didn’t switch back to Judaism, and this is all speculation. He could still be a Christian.
I suggest that y’all leave him alone. Why does it matter his religion? He is an amazing musician and that should be that.

          • As to Alana’s comment. She does not speak for all of those who are of Jewish descent. She only speaks for those who want to deny that Jesus is the Messiah. No, I am not Jewish, but I have known Jews who believe that Jesus is the Messiah. The very first Christians were Jewish and nobody back then was denying that they were Jews.

        • The term “messianic Jew” is redundant. Judaism is a messianic religion. A Jewish person does not identify themselves as messianic because it’s understood.
So why then the term “messianic Jew”?
It is a catch phrase for Christian.

        • Amen. Apparently he is speaking through you. Jesus is a Jew and Christian. Jesus Christ our Savior. Such a debate, for so little reason. Hit your knees and Pray. God knows no Sect, Denomination! He loves his followers and Believers. The light for all whom seek his truth and follow his word.

      • I have many friends from a congregation of Messianic Jews who believe that Yeshua is their Messiah and is coming soon. They are Jews for Jesus. Judaism is still their heritage and culture but God revealed His Truth to them. They still adhere to their Jewish traditions however.

        • Spot on, Christianty is a name that we, as Gentiles have given ourselves, because we believe correctly that Jesus Christ was sacrificed and ressurected for our sins also. But if a person is born as a Jew and then comes to believe in Jesus Christ, such a person is referred to as a Messianic Jew. Judaism is the original religion from which Christianity was born, if all Jewish people believed in Jesus Christ, we would probably all be called Messianic Judaists.

        • We must remember that Christianity (originally called The Way) generally refers to us of the faith that are Gentiles yet through Christ have been grafted into the family of Abraham, we are adopted into the family – not the family. When Jesus returns all will be fulfilled and revealed. He will not come back as a white man with blue eyes as we see Him so often portrayed, He will come back as He was and is – a Jew, fully man and fully God in the flesh.

      • Sorry but all indications point to Bob Dylan putting his faith in Jesus Christ the Passover lamb and redeemer for all mankind. Nothing has changed.

      • You are a liar or an extremist. There ARE messianic jews. And there are more and more (maybe the reason you are so afraid!) Its shows your bias and your lack of sincerity.
You may not like it, but it IS.

        • Anyone with a strong POV is/becomes a liar and extremist, interpreting everything to fit their paradigm. I say if Jesus didn’t return in the time frame he gave then by his own religion how is he not a false prophet, and how was his death not then justified by Moses’ law?

      • If you want to be more accurate, Jews converting to Christianity doesn’t fit your preconceived anti-Christian bias. And that’s why you don’t want to be honest about it.

      • Wrong Dylan is a Christian. Once your spirit has been resurrected you can’t do no going back. Lol hahahahaha. That’s like going back into your mommas womb. It’s impossible jack. And Wexler said he even tried to convert him.

      • 25. The Wisdom of God In A Mystery (1 Corinthians 2:7-8)

Basic of knowledge under heaven is on the wisdom of God in a mystery, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Proverbs 3:19 The YHWH by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

Proverbs 8:12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. 8:13 The fear of the YHWH is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 8:14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. 8:16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. 8:18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. 8:20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: 8:21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. 8:22 The YHWH possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

1 Corinthians 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

A wisdom which none of the princes of this world knew. A wisdom which why the Lord of glory crucified.

1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

A wisdom which will destroy the wisdom of the wise

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 29:14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

A wisdom which given us an understanding of the true God

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the YHWH is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

A wisdom which led to the right path

Proverb 4:11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

A wisdom which is be the stability and strength of salvation

Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the YHWH is his treasure.

Since the wisdom of God in a mystery declared by His prophets along Old Testament and New Testament ordained before the world, then when it revealed, it become a proof that all the word in Old Testament and New Testament is true the word of God. And the six-day creation of the world by God which is written in the book of Genesis proved to be true (Genesis 1: 1-31).

Psalm 33:4 For the word of the YHWH is right; and all his works are done in truth.

In a fourth-day God made lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night, for signs, for seasons, for days and years, and to give light upon the earth (Genesis 1:14-17).

Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

The earth hath given to the children of men.

Psalm 115:16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the YHWH’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

Man is crowned with glory and honour

Psalm 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. 8:9 O YHWH our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Praise the Lord! The wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, is now revealed. With God’s help, I wrote in three titles of writing: “Good News! Salvation Comes! Saved By Grace Through Faith”, “The TRUTH That Make You Free”, and “An Open Letter To All Religious Communities” (can be search by google)

Isaiah 42:21 The YHWH is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

Psalm 118:20 This gate of the YHWH, into which the righteous shall enter.

        Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Those who love the truth that they might be saved shall escape from the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders

2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 24:25 Behold, I have told you before. 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

For God so loved the world

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

In the name of Jesus Christ the Lord

      • A Messianic Jew is a Jew who has recognised Jesus Christ as the law-fulfilling Messiah, as prophesied in the Torah and Prophets (in fact, all the scriptures the Jews consider holy point to Jesus as the Messiah from the very beginning). If a Jew follows Christ, he is what is called a messianic Jew. Just like many of Jesus’s initial followers. Those “Christians” who are not of Jewish descent or do not belong to the Jewish people, are like many of the “early church” as described in the New Testament, being “Gentiles” following Christ. The Kingdom of Heaven will accommodate both forms of Jesus-Followers. But that is the key: following Jesus.

      • HEY DRGUTKARMA,
You live in a fictional world that you have bought into by still-pharisee types. Many Jews are in fact messianic believers and still Jewish. The greatest Jew was and is Jesus and all his followers who were his disciples plus most of the first-century church and large portion of the Jesus movement of the 60s and 70s. You have been fed these old boring ridiculous lies for a long time, I am sure but I know MANY Jews who are Christians and if you really cared you would have looked up “Jews who are Christians” or some similar Google search. A few come to mind: several friends of mine, Jay Sekulow, Mitch Glaser (head of the oldest Christian ministry to Jews in the US, Trevor Rubinstein, Anita Dittman one of many Holocaust Jewish survivors, many Jewish Christians in the arts and sciences and sports world, Keith Green the late musician as well as his wife Melody, and literally millions of others. Of course, I suspect that this deceptive lie will keep you from opening your eyes. And the truth is that the numbers of Jews who are also Christians now is exploding. And if you have eyes to read, Bob Dylan is one of them and has been since his conversion to Jesus Christ in 1979. I dare you to move and get off your stuck position and do some research that might lead you yourself to the Savior!

  1. This story is mostly fabricated. I was intimately involved with Bob and Al during that period. It pains me to read these stories and I must protest them. I can not understand why Mr. Kasha has made up this account of what happened. Bob has never, and will never back this account up.

    • Paul,
While I am not the author of this story, I am told that Al Kasha is an honorable and truthful person.
I would be very interested in interviewing you to get your version of the facts.
Is it possible that your version and this story could both be true? In other words, Bob made an affirmation of faith on more than one occasion?
      Respectfully,
      Mark Ellis
      [email protected]

    • I was around then too and I have to agree with ‘firsthand’. I went to Al’s Bible studies during that time and never saw Bob there. Bob, was however, in disciple ship school at the Vineyard during those five months. I don’t see the harm in Al’s story except that it puts him at the forefront which is kind of silly.

      • I followed the story at the time, and it is true that he was involved at the Vineyard. I would not be surprised if he did not continue in following the faith, as the Vineyard had, at the time very poor theology. I then heard some Hassidic Jews in New York got a hold of him and they seemed to put doubts into his head. My son works on his compound in Malibu and I believe he is living with his girlfriend, which indicates he is not following the Bible. I will pray for him.

        • Once you are saved, you cannot be unsaved, you confess Jesus as lord and are saved instantly. You cannot loose you salvation. “I will never leave nor forsake you” says the lord. No matter what you do or say will not effect salvation, “neither height nor breath nor powers or principalities or angels or demons can separate bob from the love of God.” i would like to know if he followed on and got baptized by full immersion in water. I know he was baptized by the spirit upon confession. That’s all

          • Sounds pretty simple. Go out… get saved… return to a life of sinful debauchery. I doubt anyone who simply confesses that Jesus is Lord and is baptized is saved… anymore than registering as a Republican makes one a lifelong conservative.

In my opinion, religion should not be reduced to a farce, stripped of the real WORK that constitutes spirituality. Some people want God cheap and easy, but the story of the Christ isn’t one of cheapness or ease. You can’t just hitch yourself to Jesus and ride off into the sunset. It’s about doing God’s work, with your hands and feet, and not merely idle belief (or, perhaps better put, idol belief.)

Whatever is his faith, I only hope for Bob what I would wish for anyone: true enlightenment and true fulfillment. And this can only be had in a life IN SERVICE.

          • Jesus will never leave us, that’s true. But WE can turn from HIM. We are given free will; a wonderful gift, but this also means that we ourselves can turn away from Jesus if we so choose, but he has grace to accept us back with open arms- if we are able to hold fast to his still small voice, despite the loud distractions.

          • Jerry Wexler his producer on Long Train said Dylan tried to convert him to Christianity. He’s a Jewish atheist and he’s not lying. Bob has seen the light.

    • Firsthand, unless you reveal your name and background that can be confirmed as Mr. Kasha’s and the authors can, then I am unablento accept your comments as truth.

    • What gives you the authority to speak for someone else? This is arrogance and lying. Why are you hiding? You might wish to examine what you are saying and who Jesus is. Begin with the Gospel of John.

    • Dylan makes s___ up cause he’s funny and clever. You can’t sell your soul to put out loving words for the down trodden which is what he does. You have to do evil to sell your soul. Hitler did. Maybe artists who tell audiences to sin, but not bob

  2. [Dear Moderator—NOT TO PUBLISH—my comment was, by mistake, made as a “Reply” to the comment above it, by “John Warren”. Instead, I intended my comment to be a brand “new” comment—not in reply to another person’s particular comment. Is it possible to make that change? Thank you!]

  3. Hello, I confess I came upon this page, wanting to know “how Bob is doing”, and it’s a bit inconclusive here. But knowing the enormous opposition (especially from the media) that will confront any famous person who puts his name on the line with Jesus, I’ll keep praying for him. Believers, too, can have their spiritually strong years, but then their spiritually lean periods.
–But for the benefit of the uninitiated reading all these comments, please know that there are deep Christians who would agree with me that you may be “living with your girlfriend” (or doing any number of things that are frowned on by “the church”) and still be much, much closer to the heart of humility, the heart of mercy, the heart of love, the heart of God–the heart of the Bible, if you will–than a righteous, rule-keeping church-goer, to whom Jesus may say, “I never knew you”. The breadth & depth of the love of God is SO much more vast than lists of do’s and dont’s, and this concept is obviously what drove the religionists of Jesus’ day crazy. (I’m not familiar with the entire story, but from what I understand John Lennon, also, might have in time grown & progressed in his belief, if he hadn’t been approached & offended early on by some narrow-minded religious folks during his brief fling with Christianity. Of course, you can only imagine how if he had “come out”–ha–how this World would have fought him tooth & nail!)

    • We all hope Bob had a true conversion. But the word say’s, “ Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17. It also say’s, “ And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.Whosoever abides in him sins not: whosoever sins has not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he (Jesus) is righteous.” 1 John 3:5,6,7. This is the “manifest difference between the children of the devil and the Children of God. They both act as their father’s . The devil sinned from the beginning, Jesus never sinned! 1 John 3:8 and10. If one continues in sin, there is doubt that real conversion took place.
Can they be forgiven? Sure, 1 John 1:9. But, there is willful, or presumptuous sin which is not what John was speaking about. If one continues in sin, this one would not be “abiding in Christ” 1 John 3:6. But would be “crucifying to themselves the son of God afresh, and putting Him to an open shame.” Hebrews 6:6, which isn’t happening.
We are not to have anything to do with sin, as Paul said in Romans 6:2, “How shall we who are dead to sin live any longer there in?” Peter said the very same words in 1 Peter 2:24, ”
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:…” Remember, “He that does righteousness is righteous”, 1 John 3:7. There should be manifest evidence! God see’s the heart, we see the manifestation of it!

      • Judge not lest you be judged!
You sound like a modern day Pharisee.
Dylan’s influence has planted seed of persuasion that has boar more fruit in times of 3 Christ centered albums than your fruit could bear in 10 lifetimes. Resulting in tons of people spending eternity in heaven vs hell! People you pass every day are going to hell forever because you don’t know enough of the love of Christ lead them to Savior and Lord because your to busy beating up the dignity and reputation of a Celebrity who found the one true God through Jesus Christ. It’s bible educated deralics like you that drive away powerful celebrities from fellowshiping with the Saints consistently walking around with you giant bibles and clip boards checking who’s naughty or nice like Santa Clause. I feel sorry for you. You must have more enemies than friends of the Faith picking on people at church desiring worship with their father in heaven. So they pick anywhere they want and churches dwindle because they can’t live up to your demands cramped down their throats by immature head knowledge vs the loving healing curing edifying inspiring love one feels from a man of God walking in the Spirit of God. I love YOU IN THEORY LORD BOB DYLAN… please forgive my brothers pesky irratating irrational obnoxious claims superimposed upon you in front of your public and fans. Forgive him for he knows not what he does.

  4. Firsthand makes comments without a name. Makes me wonder. Kind of like everybody in the world was at dodger stadium when kirk gibson hit his homerun.

  5. Either add “A” to the beginning of the first sentence or remove the comma after “Jew.” Otherwise, there’s a grammatical error within the first five words, which hurts credibility.

    • Yes! because you cannot become unsaved ever, you are saved for eternity.
So bob will always be saved, no matter what he does or does’nt do or even say it is not possible to loose you salvation.

  6. I was surprised to hear the early interviews with Bob Dylan, in that, they revealed an almost timid, pretty boy (he was very pretty then and still has those fire blue eyes to electrify people with today). It frankly made me like him more, to see that he was that vulnerable. After he had explained to Ed Bradley his reasons for wearing the unusual hats; hats of irony if you will, that he chose to wear[ i.e., better to allow the public to think him “out in left field” by contrast to widely held public belief of the iconic legend the man was expected to be, and to life up to, by the masses], he chose far-fetched (by most standards) hats, foreign to his image, in order to keep his humanity (and sanity) in check. In other words, it was “the world” that was expecting too much of him and so he had to reject the world’s view of him, by choosing unusual hats, to throw the world a curve ball.. That was my take from that interview with EB.

  7. Bob Dylan Saved (album) – Like an album or song, once made-sung, always made unless you repudiate it and even then, like Peter, who rejected Jesus to his face, maybe your ‘unsaved,’ except you have this Radical Pursuer upon you, The Hound of Heaven, not wanting to ever let you go. Most of us are not that strong or stupid to fight that hard and long to ‘Serve Somebody’ else permanently. Bob’s saved, he’s just struggling and needs our prayers, like anyone, to help pull him through. His Slow Train’s Still Coming!

  8. Bob Dylan was a believer since (or before!) his first album ~ “Gospel Plow” , “In My Time Of Dying” ! ~ At what time and date Bob made a commitment to Christ is immaterial ! ~ He’s latest release “Tempest’ is full of Biblical references ! and his upcoming album contains song he has been encoring with in most recent tour ~ “Stay With Me” – beautiful prayer-hymn song ! ~ Dylan is, was and at 73 will continue to be a Christian !

  9. I had understood that Dylan “disowned the Faith” for almost three decades. It’s great to hear someone clear things up.

At the same time, if Dylan had disowned the Faith then Dylan wouldn’t give a hoot regarding Christ, at all.

  10. I’ve been a Christian since 1980, ultra strong at first then a gradual withering way. I’ve recently convinced myself that I am no longer a Christian but there is something inside me that still compels me to pray and think about what Jesus did for all mankind. It’s hard to describe how that one can can feel hopeless yet still look to Christ for help. I guess the words may be true, “if you believe with your heart that Christ died for yours sins and that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (rough paraphrase) Even though we may abide in temporary unbelief, He still resides within, “He cannot deny Himself.”

After seeing Bob’s radical conversion and subsequent leveling off I would say his name is in the “Book of Life” and it will never be removed.

    • Noel, I believe the Spirit testifies to your spirit whether you are a child of God (Romans 8:16). It’s interesting to me that even though you’ve convinced yourself you’re not a believer, you still feel compelled to pray and to remember what Christ has done for us. If you have a new nature, a nature that looks for righteousness and mercy and forgiveness, you will still struggle…. But you would never long for those kinds of things before the life of Christ (the Spirit) caused you to be born again. From reading your comment, it seems that you have had that experience. Rest in the finished work of Christ only, never your performance. Meditating on Christ’s sufficiency, not your lack of sufficiency, will pull you through to greater faith in no time.

  11. When the Holy Spirit enters your innermost being, your heart, y0u are saved. So if Bob Dylan had that experience, then he’s saved today and forever. It doesn’t matter what he has or hasn’t done since. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably doesn’t understand their own sinfulness. God bless him.

    • True, all born again believers receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation and He resides in their hearts…..no matter their sinful state which may grieve and quench the Spirit seeking to guide them, but never departing until death. Then we will all be judged by Jesus with truly born again believers for works before receiving crowns or rewards, if any, before entering into God’s presence. Unbelievers will be condemned to eternal suffering in a real hell vividly described in the true story, not parable, in Luke 16;19-31 told by the absolutely truthful Jesus (see John 14;6, the most consequential and intolerant statement of His divine attributes ever made by the Creator of the universe and all therein ( John 1;3)

  12. I was just listening to “Slow Train Coming” and the song “Precious Angel” just moved me so much, more than it has before, and I was amazed at how God’s Word must have been living so richly in Dylan’s heart when he wrote that. So I googled “Bob Dylan as a Christian” and read this article. There’s a comment here today even though the first ones are in 2012 and now I’m here too. I think about Bob Dylan sometimes and pray for him, because I know he is still born again and a member of the body of Christ. I saw him in concert in Charleston, WV around 1979 when he was performing songs from “Slow Train Coming.” It was a small venue, which made me think how his God-inspired songs weren’t gaining him great acclaim since they are not of this world. Several people held up their lighters at the end.

  13. Comments like; “Rest in the finished work of Christ only, never your performance.”
“ It doesn’t matter what he has or hasn’t done since. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably doesn’t understand their own sinfulness”
Thing is, John tells us slightly different in 1 John 3: 6-8 “ Whosoever abides in him sins not: whosoever sins has not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
It is possible to sin after believing, but it is not what a Christian is known for. John earlier said 1 John 2:1, “These things have I written that you sin not and “if” any man sin we have an advocate….”
Notice, “if” we sin. Not, “when” we sin! Why? Because he further shows that there is a great “manifest” difference between the “children of the devil” and the “Children of God” verse 10. The devils children sin, since they just imitate their father, “who sinned from the beginning” verse 8. But, the Children of God imitate their Father who, ”did no sin” 1 Peter 2:21,22, ” For even hereunto were you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps: Who did no sin,..”
God only knows Bob’s heart, but the world see’s his action’s, his sinning or lack of. John further say’s in 1 John 3:7, “He that does righteousness is righteous, even as He (Jesus) is righteous.”
This means , it does matter what we have or haven’t done, and what our performance is. It’s the manifest difference! We are not to imitate the devils kids! As actions are a sure sign of “Who’s kid you are”.
    This is why the word instructs us to;
    1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto you art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
    Hebrews 3:14
“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end”

  14. Bob Dylan did sell his soul to the devil… For his fame! He did walk away from the music industry for a while and found Christ but had to return due to the contract he made with the devil! People need to wake up this happens in the music industry! For him to be truly saved he has to repent and live for Christ!

    • What is up with Christians saying everyone “sold their soul to the devil” as if it was the end all decision? YOU are perpetuating the lie of the devil here. Because even if some foolish young person made such an oath, that is NOT THE FINAL WORD! A person can make all kinds of evil oaths, only to change their minds later. If Bob Dylan truly became a Christian, (which no doubt he DID), then his soul is owned by JESUS and NO DEVIL HAS ANY POWER TO TAKE IT! Please, stop citing that trash and get straight with the Lord. Sometimes I think Christians in their limited understanding, (to our own shame), are our worst enemies! Bob Dylan, if you are reading this, God Bless You. Jesus owns your soul and has imminent domain there. No devil can possess your soul if you tell him to get lost. I am so sick of dumb fellow believers who sound more like apologists for hell than folks who actually have read the Word of God! Blessings to everyone. Kick out devils and speak truth!

      • Selling your soul to the devil is a silly Miltonian folklore since the devil has no need for paying even a penny to anyone for their souls or bodies. He merely competes with God by deluding multi billions of unbelievers who defy God by choice or default…all at no cost to Satan. Satan is highly effective in subverting the majority of unbelieving humanity like a totally evil salesman sending them to a hell…….no, not run by Satan, but created and run by God. Thus hell currently is the eternal abode of multi billions of souls of dead unbelievers, ultimately also including Satan and the fallen angels as occupants, not custodians.
Bottom line: Jesus is Lord and Judge of all humanity….but Savior ONLY of the FEW who seek and follow Him….with the vast majority eternally consigned to a literal hell.

    • I think Loreta has Bob Dylan mixed up with Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam). His conversion to Islam caused him at first to stop playing many of his former songs. He has since resumed playing most of them. This echoes Dylan’s progression as a Christian. Recent converts are often zealous to a fault. If anyone doubts Dylan’s sincerity, check out his response to an interviewer’s question about being called Judas by a British fan in 1966. He refers to Jesus as “our Lord.” Does that sound like a man who sold his soul to the devil?

      • Yes, in Rolling Stone September 2012 issues. He refers to Jesus as “Our Lord.” Sounds like something only a believer would say.

    • True. Bob played harmonica on Keith’s song Pledge My Head to Heaven. There is an interview with Keith’s widow about the time Bob spent with Keith’s family in the book The Gospel According to Bob Dylan: The Old, Old Story for Modern Times by Michael J. Gilmour.

  15. I want to add something here. I’ve been working with Vince Daniels on putting the Original KYMS 106.3 on YouTube. Vince was told by Bob Dylan himself to take off all of Bob Dylan’s Christian songs. So reluctantly he did.

  16. Bob Dylan is my brother. I will see him in heaven. Now shut up and get back to doing what you were doing because it’s none of your business. Find something better to do. Maybe you can watch tv or eat some grapes. Take out the trash, maybe. Watch a movie.

  17. Many posts here mislead, to confirm what the article said, “the world doesn’t like to see someone like him being a believer because he’ll bring other people to the Lord, which he’s done.”

The gnawing of teeth by those who are less tolerant to another’s beliefs is evident here and a further good lesson to observe.

  18. The gospel is always new; always confounding and rejected by many. This is reflected, subtly, by the arts and in Dylan’s case, music. He gets that you don’t hit a finishing nail with an engineer hammer.

  19. I was talking to a friend of mine at work,
I proceed to share with him how I used to
Listen to Bob Dylan. I invited Jesus in my
Life in 1980. Slow train blasting in my work
Truck and Saved ! I often wonder how he is
Doing, I wish there was a way to tell him my
Appreciation for the Great Music that influenced my Christian walk. I will continue
To pray For Bob for wisdom, health and Peace
    In Christ!

  20. Bob Dylan is still an ardent Christ follower. His conversion experience was real and despite tremendous challenges he faithfully walked, spoke in public, wrote and sang fervently about his relationship with Jesus. Bob has never seen this as a religion, but a relationship which continues to this day. Those close to him acknowledge his faith in Christ is ongoing, however Bob is an intensely private man and asked those close to him to not participate in conversations about his personal life. There are whispers that he is considering a release of another evangelical recording advancing the cause of Christ in light of what is taking place in the world today. The passion for his Lord and Savior has never gone away, but the timing had to be in line with God’s timing. He provided a hint of what is yet to come when asked about Tempest and he stated it was originally suppose to be more like “A Closer Walk With Thee” than what came forth. Bob is an intensely private, humble and blessed man who does not feel worthy regarding the call on his life. He is waiting upon Our Lord to have him pick up the mantel of faith to usher in the Return of Jesus Christ to this world. Please continue to pray for him!

  21. I am a completed Jew who discovered that the God of my Fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob was and is revealed in Christ. I met Him in 1971 at Harvard University and have never looked back. Even before Christ was revealed to me as the Messiah, I heard whispers of His voice in Bob Dylan’s songs. Bob was a searcher and very early on he knew “That the answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind.” Once the Son kisses a heart, that heart never forgets. Bob is still a completed Jew and a Christian.

    • Elliott
I heared your testimony Dec muer 4th in Marseille and would very much like to have it on a written form (specialy your encounter with Jesus in 1971 near river Charles in Boston)
      Thanks in advance

  22. I agree with Tom because he did not talk from his own mouth and knows there is a judgement day as Jesus says in:

    John 12:48
He that rejects me and does not receive my words has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

    Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Only God knows the heart of Bob Dylan and all of us and all of mankind.

  23. Israel, the people of the Almighty, have the unique monopoly on salvation. Israel’s olive tree springs forth from the root of Jesse, the Torah, the living Savior. She is the Tree of Life for all those who seize Her; And happy are those who cling to Her. Her teachings are pleasant; and all Her paths are peace. The sprout of Jesse, the living Torah, the Savior is one with its root. One must be “grafted” (or re-grafted) into the scars of the living Torah unto salvation. An absurd unreasonable belief is the only acceptable way of joining. Learn from The Olive Tree Graftsman!

  24. Jesus Christ is the true living God, Jesus said to the disciple’s , if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father, for my Father, God Jehovah and I are one. Jesus claimed to be equal with His Farther, for He sits at the right side of His Father on the almighty throne. All men are as flesh including Bob Dylan , God is a non respecter of person. regardless of talents, gifts, calling, ect. May God bless Bother Dylan and may God use him to win thousands of souls for the glory of God in Jesus name.

  25. We are living in the days that John wrote about in the Book of Revelation. Our Messiah is returning soon. Bob Dylan reminds me often of our Lion of the Tribe of Judah’s words in in Luke 21:25-28.

  26. This is in response to all who have attempted to JUDGE (krino is the Greek word which implies in its meaning a casting into Bellaire” We are commanded: ” JUDGE not lest you be judged” It is not for us to JUDGE Bob Dylan. My discernment of the man is that he is spirit filled with the Holy Spirit. I saw Dylan with an incredible entourage of singers at the Landmark Theatre in the late 70s in Syracuse, NY. What a time of worship.Do any of us know how long it takes to be born again? Let us not krino sinners or saints .Know that the process of sanctification takes a lifetime. I love you guys.

  27. Dear Lord, In the mighty name of Yeshua Ha Messhiach , Jesus, The Christ, I lift up my brother who once so joyfully sang unashamedly of all of the riches of Your glory. Dear Lord, his music today speaks of compromise in the heavenly realm (1 Kings 18:21). It speaks of bondage to the seducing spirit that rules over the recording industry. In the mighty Name of Yeshua, Jesus, I pray Dear Lord that You will bring alongside my brother, firepans of Your choosing to rescue Him that he may be an instrument of righteousness in Your mighty right hand in this hour of the great soul harvest for Your kingdom and Your glory. Rescue him from the way of Balaam that Yeahua, Jesus, spoke of in Revelation 2:12-17. Amen

  28. Who gives a s___ which religion he is ? It’s all a bunch of b________. Every one has an imaginary sky wizard and they think that there’s is the true one. Bob’s only flaw in this world is that he is a religitard. I hate that for him. Someone indoctrinated him well because he is too smart to be a sheep. I still love him though.

  29. Dear Sheila,
You seem very angry about the idea that Dylan, or the people who have commented on this article, have an interest in a spiritual life at all. I have a desire to know why. I can’t help but wonder. Were you hurt somehow by a “religious” person or group? Or, is it a case of
believing that if one possesses an ability to reason and use critical thinking, one would never be a believer in a higher power or Creator?

I have no wish to offend you, but my heart does grieve for you, because your anger seems so strong, and often anger spills out when one is in pain. I sense you have a deep need for the unconditional love, and acceptance of the One who created you and knows you best. Or possibly you feel you are quite strong and able in life, and only the very emotionally needy and ignorant believe in God.

Please forgive me if I am totally off on this perception of your words. I am not judging you or wanting to invade your rights or business. Also, just because I am a believer, I’m not offended or “bugged” by the fact that you are not. That is your choice. We all have free will. However, I wonder if you have closed the door on faith before you have explored it fully.

For a long time, in my life, i thought that religions, and the whole “God” thing was for “followers” who were lead into things without thinking for themselves, and that it was boring and stupid and just “man’s tradition”. And I do think that is how some people are in houses of faith..just following a tradition that they learned from their family. I finally had a spiritual awakening, and explored on my own my creator and savior who I found in the Bible. I let the Holy Spirit and the Word of God lead me, rather than following everything said in any particular Christian church or what is actually the tradition of Man that is sometimes experienced in todays “churches” .

Christian churches and Jewish gatherings can be wonderful places of worship, and I do attend them to be part of a body of believers. Much can be learned there, but I use discernment as to what to totally embrace. Being that none of us humans are perfect, some groups can also be rather dysfunctional. Don’t blame or reject God just because His children do and say stupid things sometimes. That doesn’t make God any less true or valid.

At this point, i’ll let you know that there are many well written books by scientists, intellectuals, ex-athiests, that have used their critical thinking and investigative skills and who have given reasons for their personal journey from dis-belief to belief in A loving Creator and a plan for man and woman kind as revealed in the Bible. I , for one, know how a personal relationship with my Lord has opened me up, even mentally to amazing discoveries about all aspects of life, and also brought a very deep level of healing.

It’s not that I actually felt my life was empty without God, but with A knowledge and relationship with God, I have a sense of identity, destiny and purpose beyond anything I had known before. I invite you to Seek out a few of the above mentioned books and to check them out. I’m sure you are very able as far as doing a google search, (Does God Exist? Etc.) and in reading you will certainly learn something, whether you embrace what is being written or not. Please don’t resist books that are written by those who are now believers, ex athiests, scientists, etc. What do you have to lose? I will be praying for you, that you will know the truth, for the truth will set you free, in this life, and for all eternity.

  30. I’ve been told that Bob Dylan is no longer a Jew or a Christian. They say he is now a Koreshtian and today August 17th is Koreshmas.

  31. I just found this from last year. It says a lot with his comments about Billy Graham that he has not abandoned the Christian faith ahttp://www.aarp.org/entertainment/style-trends/info-2015/bob-dylan-aarp-the-magazine-full-interview.4.htmllthough he is generally silent about his own relationship with God:

  32. Can you clarify in paragraph six: Do you mean “album” or “record” since CDs didn’t exist in the 1960s.

  33. The apostle Paul was admonishing the believers of his time when they were arguing who was a better teacher, Paul, Apollos, who are mere men. Neither the planter or the waterer are anything, but God who causes the growth…1 Corinthians 3:1-9.

    Stop it!

  34. God knows the truth about Dylan. I do believe that once a person gives their heart to Jesus then Jesus, who is God, will keep them. It is possible for a man to turn away, but it does not seem to me he has ever done so. Paul called the Corinthians ‘saints’, and also said: “It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, of such a kind as is not so much as even named among the Gentiles: that one should have his father’s wife.” So if God sees sinful Corinthians as saints despite their horrible sins, I think Dylan is safe.

    • Simon Peter Sutherland, I have seen those that I believe to be Christian use God’s name in vain, curse other believers and do things that are not considered Christian; I still believe them to be Christian and saved. I’m glad Jesus died for ALL my sins, even the ones I find reprehensible now. Sometimes most of us are lead down a road of destruction of the body, but the soul will be saved.

      • R, I too know so called ‘believers’ who blaspheme God, but they cannot be true Christians, for a tree is known by its fruits (Maathew 3: 10, 7: 18) and the Scripture cannot be broken (John 10: 35) It is written in the commandments “the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” Exodus 20: 7

I cannot and will not accept that anyone who is united with the Lord Jesus Christ would take his name in vain, if they do, it is merely evidence that they are not abiding in the goodness of Christ and are in danger of being “cut off” (Romans 11: 22) They have no right to the tree of life (Revelation 22: 14)

  35. The Jews didn’t believe that Jesus was the Messiah, but that wasn’t the only serious reason for not recognizing Him at His 1st coming. …The major reason that Christ was rejected was because the Jews didn’t realize that their coming Messiah was going to be God Himself. So when Jesus claimed to be God, that automatically excluded Him from being the Messiah (more than anything else ) because in their eyes He was committing blasphemy against God. They were offended on behalf of Yahweh, because they didn’t understand the Trinity The were a people set apart to God among a world filled with polytheist pagans, and were zealous to honor the only true God, but they failed to notice in Holy scripture , that God said in the beginning, “Let US make man in our image. “. In the Old Testament God’s name in Hebrew is Elohim. “im” is plural Hebrew it’s the same as adding an “s” to a word in English to make it plural…(more than one). The Apostle Paul a Jew of Jews, acknowledged that zeal without knowledge lead to error. Some so-called Christians still deny the deity of Christ. Since the early 4th century Arius taught that heresy and many cults claiming to be Christian still exist today, such as Mormonism and Jehovah’s witnesses. Even Islam has it’s roots in this belief system. Mohammed was influenced by Christianity since Christianity predates the Muslim faith. Early on Mohammed respected “the people of the book” ie early Christians and adopted Arius’ teaching the Jesus was not God the Son , equal to God the Father. Mormons, Jeh Witnesses’ , Islam, and many other belief systems deny the Trinity. Jesus never claimed to be just a rabbi, if that were the case He wouldn’t have been crucified. He claimed to be God the Son , who was One with the Father, and He promised that He would not leave us comfortless in this temporary world, but that He will send us The Holy Spirit… God The Holy Spirit, who hovered above the waters ( the face of the deep), who’s power was used to create the physical world. In the book of Romans the Apostle Paul speaks joyfully of his kinsmen being grafted back in. Unlike the Mormons , JW’s and Islam, which was birthed from heresy…. Judaism has pure roots, based in the truth of God’s word in the Old Testament. they will be brought back into the fold when they realize that Jesus is their Messiah, and their messiah is God ! Those involved in other belief systems will have to renounce the faith in those heresies and believe the Gospel of Christ.

  36. When I saw Dylan w Tom Petty he did the songs In The Garden and Dead Man Dead Man and that is proof that he’s still Christian!

  37. At last the waiting; the answer has finally been verified by Bob in the soon to be released Gospel Years in Nov 2017! These include not only his Christian faith journey gloriously shared in Slow Train, Saved & Shot of Love, but underscored by 10 additional previously unreleased songs of faith as well as documented Bob speaking clearly about his commitment to Christ. As all of us recognize, Bob Dylan is known for rarely speaking at his Concerts with the exception of 1979, 1980 & 1981 when he boldly proclaimed his commitment to Jesus Christ in word & song. If he had a change of heart over the years, I doubt he would release a “revival” of his heart felt commitment to his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ! Thanks Bob for “Pressing On to the higher calling of Our Lord!” Philippians 4:13
